Wingate Elementary
Family Newsletter April 2024
Wingate Families-
There are several activities I hope that you can join us for in the month of April including the popular ProKids Family Program and PTO's Trivia Night!
While we have many fun activities coming up in the next two months, we still have lots of learning happening in classrooms. We want to keep students engaged and working hard until the very last week of school. Please help us by continuing to have set bedtimes in place, even for 5th graders as well as reminding students to get their homework completed and to be reading often. We only get them in a grade level for less than 10 months so we want to pour as much into them as we can in that amount of time.
Please reach out if you need anything from us at Wingate. Thanks for your continued support!

ProKids Event at Wingate on April 4th-
We are super excited to welcome Tim Hannig to Wingate this month! Tim will perform one show for students during the day and then a completely different show for families that evening. There is no charge to families for this event because we used Fun Run fundraising money to pay for this. Doors open at 6:15 PM. Here's a link so you can see more about the show-https://www.premier-showcase.com/directory/video.php?dir_id=2076
Hope you can join us!
Eclipse at Wingate-
On Monday, April 8th our area will witness a solar eclipse. The eclipse will begin at approximately 12:40 PM and it will gradually get darker outside until it is estimated to be at its darkest around 2:00 PM and then the sky will start to get lighter. The eclipse should end at approximately 3:18 PM.
We have purchased eclipse safe glasses for all student and staff that will be at school on Monday, April 8th. We did send home a permission slip with all families at the start of the month for parents to give consent for their students to be outside, with glasses on, for viewing some of the eclipse. Please be sure to return these to school with your child.
We are adjusting our schedule on April 8th so all lunches and recess are finished by 12:40 so that students are with their teachers during the eclipse timeframe. Depending on the grade level, teachers will have activities regarding the eclipse to complete with students on this day.

Fast Food Brought into School by Parents-
Parents have the option of having lunch with your their students up to 4 times a year. If you decide to do this, please either bring a brown bag lunch or buy a lunch in the cafeteria. In the past we have had several issues with parents bringing in fast food for students. Because of these issues, several years ago we placed this in the student handbook-
Pg. 5 Lunch Guests-Parents are able to attend lunch at school with their child up to four times per school year. Please note: No food may be brought in from fast food restaurants during lunch hours.
Also, please do not bring in food and drinks for other children in the cafeteria. Thanks for following this guideline and supporting us on this topic.
PTO Trivia Night-
If you don't have plans on Saturday, April 13th, please come out and support PTO and join us at Trivia. You can organize a table and play with friends and family. Here is the flyer with all the details. Here is the link to sign up for a table-https://wingateelementary.futurefund.com/go/36636-fandom-trivia-night

Illinois Principal's Association Student Winner from Wingate-
As part of the IPA, I have the privilege of attending a student recognition breakfast each Spring with area Principals. Each Principal can bring one student (from their oldest grade level) and their family, to a breakfast and ceremony to be recognized. This year at Wingate, we are proud to recognize 5th Grader, Sophia Fortae. Here is a little about Sophia that makes her a perfect candidate to receive this recognition-
Sophia is a very intelligent student who puts forth her best effort every single day. She is the first one to raise her hand to participate in class. Not only does she stand out academically, but also socially. Sophia is great with working with others and making others feel included. She is quick to include others in group/partner work, and always has a positive attitude. She is kind and generous towards her peers and teachers while being humble.
Week of the Military Child-
Looking ahead to later in April, we will celebrate Week of Military Child, April 22-26. After Spring Break we will be sending home a letter to families and an activity for our military kids to complete and return to school. Here are the color days for that week-
