Civics Week
Civic Learning Week is March 11-15
Civic education is needed more than ever to provide every person across this country with the necessary tools to engage as members of our self-governing society. We know that the best civic learning happens both in and outside of the classroom, and is a lifelong endeavor touching every facet of society.
Civic Learning Week brings together students, educators, policymakers, and leaders in the public and private sectors to highlight the need to make that learning a priority. Civic Learning Week is a national event, building on the success of the collaboration across three states by the Massachusetts Civic Learning Coalition (MCLC), New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) and Rhode Island Civic Learning Coalition (RICLC) in 2022. This multi-state collaboration hosted events that prompted participation by 20,000 students, teachers, and others.
Opportunities for Students - Sandra Day O’Connor Civics Challenge: The O’Connor Institute Civics Challenge is open to all 6-12th graders and provides an opportunity to earn cash prizes. Students are challenged to choose one civics topic and express their knowledge through various art forms. Entries will be accepted through March 29, 2024.
National Center for State Courts Civics Essay Contest: NCSC's Civics Education Essay Contest allows 3rd -12th-grade students to understand and explain the importance and the role of the United States government. Each student must have an email address and submit their essay using the link below. The contest ends at midnight on March 22nd.
Civics at Nipmuc: Junior students at Nipmuc Regional participate in student-led civics projects that ask students to apply civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions to engage in the process of creating social and political change in their communities. This civic action follows six stages, beginning with the examination of local, state, and national issues and followed by the selection of a specific topic of student interest and ending with a showcase of student work. Mark your calendars, the 3rd Annual Civics Showcase will be held on May 29, 2024.

Opportunity for the Class of 2025
Mastery Transcript Consortium
Last week we shared the opportunity of the Mastery Learning Record (MLR) with all members of the Class of 2025. Nipmuc is one of about 400 schools across the globe that provide students with the opportunity to use this innovative school record as a way to tell their full story to colleges, universities, and employers. This may provide support as you consider your post-high school options.
Any interested junior is invited to attend a short information session presented by Mr. Clements and Mrs. Moran on Wednesday, March 20 during both breaks in the Gathering Room. There's no commitment to build a Mastery Learning Record if you attend. Sign up here to join this session. (Please note that students must be logged into your Google account to respond.)
Save the Date: For those students interested in creating an MLR, we plan to kick-off our work together on the Mastery Learning Record on Wednesday, March 27 from 2:10-3:15pm. If you are not able to attend this session, you can still participate in the program.
