2022-2023
Candler Elementary Info
So far this year, we have experienced a much longer back-up than we have had in the past in the mornings. If you are dropping off in the car line, please help us by making sure your students are ready to get out of the car with all of their materials. It is best practice to have them enter and exit on the passenger side of the car, and not walk around to/from the drivers side. Please let students know that it is ok for them to open their own car door in the morning as long as an adult is nearby on the sidewalk.
If you would like for your child to start riding the bus, please call Mrs. Frady in the office so we can get them on a route. We would love to have them! Also, bus ridership week is September 26-30, so we would like as many riders as possible that week!

Curriculum Information
Kindergarten
In Kindergarten we have been learning the school rules and why they are important. We are learning how to recognize and write lowercase letters. We are learning strategies for counting objects. We are learning how to sort objects into different groups. In our Play-Based Centers, we are learning how to sort and clean up materials.
1st Grade
In first grade we have been learning and practicing school and classroom rules, procedures and routines. We have been reading about books and how reading can be fun. Students have been reviewing counting and quantity. We are beginning to practice story problems involving addition.
2nd Grade
3rd Grade
Our 3rd graders have been busy bees at the start of this year! Students are learning the growth mindset. In math, students learned that “Mistakes Allow Thinking to Happen = MATH.” Students are also learning to multiply by grouping. In ELA, Social Studies, and Science, students are learning about the importance, functions, and types of water. In our Dual Language classes, students are celebrating and learning about Hispanic Heritage month by creating an art gallery.
4th Grade
In ELA, we have been working on our routines and procedures and how reading builds our knowledge. Our students have enjoyed learning about examples of how the earth changes due to slow processes such as erosion, weathering, and rapid processes such as landslides, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, which integrates our Science & Social Studies curriculum.
4th Grade Dual Language is reading the story "El viento en los Sauces" and "Las aventuras de Don Gus" in Spanish Language Arts. They are learning about retelling stories (reading comprehension) considering chronological events, characters and settings in a fiction story; they are enhancing their language skills while identifying common and proper nouns, conjugating verbs in simple present and writing complete sentences considering elements of coherence and cohesion.
4th grade is planning a big field trip to Raleigh in the Spring and will be doing a lot of fundraising to help cut costs for everyone. The first fundraiser will be Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for $10 a dozen on Friday, October 7. We will be sending home a pre-order form for that date on September 28.
