What's Hatching?
December 2022
Why Showing Up Matters!
As we move along in the school year, I thought it would be helpful to remind our students and families that regular school attendance is vital for student success. When students attend school regularly, starting as early as preschool and kindergarten, they have an opportunity to achieve academically and thrive.
We understand that situations may arise that cause a child to be absent from school. When that occurs, we ask that you please call the Attendance Office directly at 589-2031 to report your child's absence. We recognize that many communicate with their child's classroom teacher directly and may feel that letting the teacher know their child will be absent is sufficient. However, to maintain accurate attendance records, it is extremely important to also contact the Attendance Office directly.
For more information regarding our attendance policy and much more, I have included the link to view the 2022-23 parent handbook.

Albion Eagles
Soaring towards a bright drug free future!
Spotlight Moments:
- November 11: School was closed in honor of Veteran's Day. During that week, students across the District participated in various activities and events in honor of Veteran's Day.
- November 22: Grade 4 students and teachers participated in Native American Day. It was a big success! Students learned to sculpt clay pots, create beadwork, communicate with symbols and play lacrosse all while learning about the customs and meanings behind the activities.
- November 29: Students from SLC (Student Leadership Council) visited the Albion Village offices to decorate a large Christmas tree that was donated by Heberle Farms. There were nearly 360 ornaments created and donated by some of Mrs. Prince's Art class to be placed on the tree. The day was coordinated by SLC advisors Cathy Galbreth and Cathy Hryhorenko. Thanks to all the village officials who made the day both informative and enjoyable for the students.

December’s Theme: Coping with the Holiday Blues
While the holiday season is often an exciting time for families, for many the holiday season can bring up feelings of stress or grief and loss. Grief is defined by the American Psychological Association as the anguish experienced after a significant loss, usually the death of someone loved. Grief can also occur after a huge family change such as a separation or divorce, the loss of a job or income, or significant move to another home.
In children, grief may appear as separation anxiety, confusion, yearning for the person who has died or relationship to return to the way it once was, dwelling on the past, and worrying about the future. Often, grief may take the form of regret for the things a person has done or said, or what they didn’t do. Grief also lowers our immune systems, and the ability to care for ourselves.
Here are some strategies to help you and your loved ones cope with grief and loss this holiday season:
It’s okay to acknowledge your feelings about loss. By displaying your emotions and feelings during this time, it helps your child understand that it’s okay to feel and express these tough emotions. You don’t have to hide your tears!
Children have no language or model for grieving or coping with tough feelings until adults provide them. The words you use and feelings you express will shape your child’s view of stress, grief, and loss. Use honest words to help eliminate confusion.
Keep family traditions and allow for the creation of new ones! Encourage your family to discuss, before the holidays, how you want to remember and honor your loved ones during this time of year.
Respect that some family members may need space and time to grieve during holiday events.
Use this time as an opportunity to teach your child about community. Your child will see and remember how the adults in their lives care for each other during difficult times. Reach out for help if you or your child need it. Here are some amazing resources for families in our community:
