Evening Star Elementary
November 2023-2024
A Note from Principal Williams:
Good morning, Evening Star Families!
WHOOOO's ready for some PIE! Our annual Pie Supper is TONIGHT, Thursday, November 2nd, and we can't wait to see every ESE family fill our playground, cafeteria, and bus loop. Our doors will open promptly at 4:30 p.m. Our outdoor event will include old-fashioned games, folk music, square dancing, a pie auction, and so much more. Bring your own picnic-pie supper, or grab a bite from the food trucks. Check out the games, enter the silent auction to pie an ESE staff member, and stomp your boots to some great folk music as you square dance and just have fun. Check out the times for our events featured in the picture below. Also, additional details were outlined in the October 27th email from ESE. However, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact our ESE PTO, your child's homeroom teacher, or our front office staff. We want to personally thank the businesses who have donated goods/services to Evening Star. When you have an opportunity, we hope you will join us in personally thanking them for supporting our school and this incredible annual event.

The lunch times for each grade level are listed in the linked Google Form. As you know, your child's safety is a top priority for the Bentonville School District and the Evening Star Elementary staff. As per Bentonville Schools policy, anyone who would like to attend various school functions, have lunch with their child or grandchild, etc., must have their ID processed through our Raptor system. We ask all parents and grandparents to assist us with this process by ensuring you have a valid driver's license or a state identification card when coming to the school. Please be advised any visitor who does not have a valid driver's license or state identification card will be denied access to any part of the building beyond the office door. Once your child's lunch is over, please make your way to the office to check out. Guests are not permitted to walk students back to their classrooms or join them on the playground. Thank you so much for your understanding and for making our students' safety a top priority.
We want to thank all our parents for participating in fall Parent-Teacher Conferences. We were able to meet with almost 100% of our families. If you were unable to make it to Parent-Teacher Conferences, we would love to meet with you. Please contact your child's teacher to get a meeting arranged. As always, we appreciate your continued support in your child's educational process. Your involvement is an essential component of student achievement, and we welcome open communication throughout the school year.

Weather:
November is here, and with it comes cooler days and sometimes wet weather. As the cold weather begins to sneak up on us, please be sure your child has dressed appropriately for school with a proper jacket, hat, footwear, etc. Keep in mind, layered clothing is always a good idea since the mornings can be chilly, and the afternoons tend to be warm. Students will go outside for recess unless it is raining, sleeting, or the wind chill is dangerously low. With our unpredictable winter weather, it is never too early for families to begin to think about an alternate plan for inclement weather days. It even looks like there is a possibility of snow in the forecast for next week.
Please know it is our intent to take students outside for recess every day. During extreme temperatures and/or wind chill, recess could be shortened. Elementary and middle school students will go outside for recess unless weather conditions make it unsafe or unwise to do so.
- Students will typically go outside if temperatures are 30 degrees F or above.
- If the temperature and/or wind chills are between 25 and 30 degrees F.
- Building administrators may use discretion when sending students outdoors.

News from Nurse Crutchfield:
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month!
Please join us in bringing awareness to Diabetes by wearing BLUE on Tuesday, November 14th, for World Diabetes Day!

Increased Thirst
Frequent Urination

Math News:
Did you know that there are Standards for Mathematical Practice that extend across all of our K-12 grade levels? Check them out below and reinforce these goals at home by asking your child to explain their thinking through homework assignments and graded work. Encourage them to persevere when faced with a challenge!

Whooo Loves to read? Your ESE OWLS DO!
What a fantastic time I am having with our Owls! 4th grade will be learning about various media formats to create book trailers; 3rd grade has been investigating conductivity using our Makey Makey sets and a variety of household items; 2nd and 1st are exploring what it takes to have an inclusive mindset, and our adorable kinders will explore the difference between a question and a statement this month.
- The ESE video team is still developing student-written, filmed, and edited daily announcements. In addition, we are discussing the possibility of creating a documentary.
- 4th-grade Book Club is enjoying our weekly Friday morning meetings!
- 4th-grade robotics is continuing to build their robots.
- 3rd grade robotics applications are out and due Friday, 11/3.
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with so many of you during Parent/Teacher conferences. One of my main purposes is to help our Owls fall in love with reading! If you need any help or have questions about book suggestions, PLEASE reach out! I am here!
Please consider continuing to support our library programs with the purchase of a celebration book!
Mrs. Watson
"Gym Shorts":
I can't believe it's already November. We will start this month off with preparing for our Annual Turkey Trot race with a very fun battleship activity and our veterans day boot camp. We will finish off the month with a few stations to review what we have already learned this year.
Coach Kerkhover & Coach Jones
ART Studio:
November is going to be such a fun month for your little owl in the art room. We are going to kick off November with printmaking, Vincent Van Gogh paintings, and Veterans Day cards.
Since November is Native American Heritage Month, students will be analyzing artwork from various tribes to inspire their own artwork. Towards the end of the month, all students will be creating and taking home their clay artwork! I am so excited for your little one to experience this! Please be on the lookout for their bubble-wrapped artwork in their backpacks!
Mrs. Barber
Music Notes:
It's time for some fall performances!
- 3rd-grade will soon be touring Northwest Arkansas to show appreciation to our veterans at the VA hospital and area retirement homes. 3rd-grade families, weather permitting, you are welcome to join us for lunch at the park on that day. (Be sure you sign in at ESE first and get your visitor's sticker, please!) All information can be found on the students' permission slips. (Sent digitally to all 3rd-grade families.)
- 2nd-grade will be performing on Thursday, November 16, at 6:00 p.m. at the Bentonville West Performing Arts Center. Parents, please see important information regarding drop off and dismissal on the following link: 2023 2nd grade musical parent note 3
Keep making music!

Global Connections:
Namaste!. In October, we finished our STEM lesson and started putting ourselves on the map. Our owls have been learning about North America and the United States. The students know how to say, “hi” in other languages, and they seem to be enjoying that quite a bit.
Each grade level will be taking a closer look at the United States of America.
- Fourth- Native Americans of Arkansas
- Third- Washington D.C.
- Second- Hawaii
- First- New York
- Kindergarten- Alaska
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schroeder
Digital Literacy
Third & fourth grades have excelled at learning ways to “work smarter, not harder!” And we are starting to type with our hands covered, so we focus on finger efficiency/muscle memory. Kinder, first, and second are finishing strong with our lessons on internet safety and learning the difference between personal and private information.
Mr. Henry
English as a Second Language:
ESL Families!
First of all, thank you to those families that could attend our October family night at the Amazeum! It was great to gather together in that environment and have some fun! Thank you for coming!
At-home practice:
Talking and listening play major roles in children's school success. It's through hearing parents and family members talk and through responding to that talk that children begin to pick up the language skills they will need if they are to do well. One fun way to do this is through a family game of “Would you Rather?”
Would you rather be invisible or able to fly?
Would you rather live without music or without movies?
Would you rather be able to control the weather or be able to talk to animals?
You can even have fun creating some of your own. Talking about what you would rather be and why is sure to lead to some fun family discussions.
Melissa Tomblin
