Signs of Suicide (SOS) Training and Screening
On January 29, 2024, students in 9th and 11th grades will be participating in the Signs of Suicide (SOS) training and screening program at Nipmuc. The SOS program is designed to increase awareness of suicide risk and depression among students and to provide them with tools to respond to signs of crisis in themselves or their peers. This program is an essential component of our commitment to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
As part of the training, students will receive valuable information on recognizing the signs of suicide and depression, as well as guidance on how to seek help for themselves or their friends. The screening is a proactive measure aimed at identifying students who may be at risk and connecting them with appropriate support services. We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, to access useful resources, and to learn more about the key message all students will learn in class.
We understand that this is a sensitive topic, and we respect the individual preferences of our families. If you do not wish for your student to participate in the SOS training and screening, please take a moment to email their school counselor. Opt-out requests must be received by January 26, 2024 to ensure appropriate arrangements. We appreciate your understanding and collaboration in our efforts to prioritize the well-being of our students. If you have any questions or concerns about the SOS program, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s counselor.

A Basketball Game for a Great Cause
The Nipmuc boys JV and Varsity basketball teams are hosting a PLAY4LLS game on Tuesday, January 16 in honor of 5 year old Ava (Ms. Annunziata, an English Teacher at Nipmuc's niece who is currently battling leukemia) beginning at 5pm at Nipmuc.
LLS stands for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. LLS is a nonprofit and a global leader in the fight against blood cancer. Their mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research, provides patient support, and advocates for cancer. This organization has already funded medications that Ava is currently taking for her battle against this awful disease, as well as provided patient support to her family in the form of gift cards.
Ms. Annunziata has been honored to work with LLS through her nomination as a 2024 Visionary of the Year where she will take part in a 10 week campaign starting on March 21st. Her goal is to raise $105,000 for the LLS Dare to Dream Campaign that is funding clinical trials specifically for children’s blood cancers. Stay tuned for more community events to help support this mission.
