PSAT Testing Tomorrow
As a reminder, any students in grades 10 & 11 that registered to take the PSAT will be taking the exam tomorrow October 12. The exam will begin promptly at 7:30am and will be completed before lunch. Room assignments were posted in the cafeteria earlier today and will be there tomorrow morning as well for students to reference. The PSAT is representative of the actual SAT exam in content, scope, and design. It will help students feel confident and prepared when they take the SATs later in their junior year. If you have any questions you can email Ms. Towne at atowne@mursd.org.

Lead Learner Workshop / Food for Thought Lunches
A week from this Tuesday on October 18 we will host our first Lead Learner Workshop kick-off meeting for the 2022-2023 school year. The first Food for Thought Lunch will follow on October 28.
Lead Learner Workshop - These hour-long workshops are Nipmuc’s most important leadership opportunities in which students and teachers work together to design the future of our school. Help us to build a new vision of success and come to share your ideas, feedback and collaborate with us. These take place in the PDC from 2:10pm-3:10pm and you can find the list of dates on the form below.
Food for Thought Lunches - These student feedback forums provide teachers and administrators with the chance to hear directly from students about what’s working and how we can make the student experience at Nipmuc the best it can be. They usually include 15-18 students, 3 - 4 teachers, and the school principals. In the past years, we’ve been able to meet with hundreds of Nipmuc students in these sessions. These collaborative events take place during lunch block and you can find the list of dates on the form below.
Sign up using THIS FORM for these upcoming opportunities or to take part in Lead Learner Workshops or Food for Thought Lunches in the future! We will look forward to seeing you there.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
The Nipmuc Drama Guild is hard at work as they prepare for their fall production of She Kills Monsters that they will aptly be performed on Halloween weekend (October 28 @ 7pm and October 29 @ 2:30pm and 7pm). As scary as the title sounds this fun fantasy travels in and out of a Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) game written by a geeky girl, no less, in the 1990s at a time when girls did not do such things! Come see if she manages to kill all the monsters she faces in life or if she leaves the hard work for her sister to finish! Tickets will be available beginning on Monday, October 17 online and will also be sold at the door. The online link will be shared in next week's newsletter.
Looking for parent volunteers
The Drama Guild is always looking for parents/guardians to help with costumes, painting, and set building. If you have any extra time on a few Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays we could use your help. Interested in helping? Please email Tam Johnson, Director, at tjohnson@mursd.org.
Nipmuc Halloween Tradition Continues
Halloween became a tradition at Nipmuc over the years. It is a day where students and faculty can showcase their creativity and imagination with their costumes and have some fun dressing up and trick-or-treating. Start thinking of your costume now and join in on the fun on October 31. This year trick or treating will take place outside (weather permitting) during the scheduled advisory time. Similar to last year, students will visit each department in the courtyard for some candy and fun treats.

Congratulations to Mr. Gorman and the Engineering 2 Students
Mr. Gorman's Engineering 2 students participated in a month-long MaxIQ Space World Space Week 2022 competition based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). They focused on providing a solution for SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy using their CubeSat sensors. The students gathered data on light and UV levels at different angles over a week. After analyzing the data, they determined that the solar panel should always be facing the sun to maximize the amount of electricity production. They designed a solar panel with a motor to keep it focused on the sun. Their project was judged runner-up in the international competition! You can watch the announcement here. As a prize, the students were awarded some advanced CubeSat sensors. Congratulations to Alex Heather, Derek Cerundolo, Marcelo Filho, Liam O'Connel, Alysse Stasio, Jacob Snow, Joe Antoun, Dominic Abisso, Jackson Theall, and Ronan Joyce who all contributed to the competition project.
This class has also been sponsored to participate in a Suborbital Launch Challenge run by MaxIQ Space, an international nonprofit dedicated to educating students about the space industry. For the Suborbital Launch Challenge, MaxIQ Space has teamed up with bluShift Aerospace, a rocket company startup based in Brunswick, Maine, seeking to service the CubeSat with rockets using non-toxic, carbon-neutral biofuel. As part of the challenge, students must design a CubeSat to collect data on a suborbital rocket launch. Students then analyze the data and report back to bluShift Aerospace so they can improve their rocket. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to participate in real-world science and engineering project and make a difference.
In November, this class will be attending a full rocket test fire in Brunswick, ME. The students will be designing and building a special device to fit the rocket during the test fire to report back mission-critical data to bluShift Aerospace. In the first or second quarter of 2023, the students have a spot for their CubeSat reserved on the first suborbital test fire! The students will present their project, which will be entered into the World Space Week 2023 MaxIQ Space competition.
We wanted to congratulate Mr. Gorman and all of the students participating in this amazing opportunity. We will continue to keep you posted on their progress and share pictures during this journey.
