Evening Star Elementary
May 2023
A Note from Principal Williams:
Happy May Day! As this school year comes to a close, we are making every minute count! Our teachers and staff are working hard to ensure mastery of grade-level specific standards, assessing students for skill proficiency, and incorporating numerous fun end-of-year activities. It has been a phenomenal year, and we want to finish strong. Thank you for making sure your child is here every day during the month of May.
Spring testing is well underway, and our students are showing impressive growth. We will work to finish up MAP testing this week. Thank you for encouraging your child to continue to do their very best.
MAP Testing Dates (Kindergarten-4th Grade):
- May 1st & 2nd - 3rd and 4th Grade MAP testing
- May 3rd & 4th - Kindergarten and 2nd Grade MAP testing
Check out the May RISE Newsletter linked HERE. It contains information about verbs and multisyllabic words.
Current 2nd - 4th-grade students will take their school-issued Chromebooks home with them for the summer. Current Kindergarten and first-grade students and any student moving out of our school district will leave their Chromebook and charger in their homeroom teacher's classroom on the last day of school.
Evening Star car tags will be collected during the last week of school. If you have a second car tag at home, please bring it the last week. We will reuse these tags again next year! All students will be issued a new car tag number for the 2023-2024 school year. Thank you for your help with this!
Be on the lookout at the end of July/beginning of August for information regarding the 2023-2024 school year. Follow our social media pages for summer activity updates!
We appreciate you and all that you do to support Evening Star Elementary. You have helped make this year the BEST one YET! Have a wonderful and safe summer.
Sincerely,
Principal Williams

End of Year Information from the ESE Office:
As we approach the end of this school year, it is very important that we have student addresses up to date in our system. If your family has moved into a new home recently or you are in the process of moving before school is out, please let our registrar, Tammy Webb (tawebb@bentonvillek12.org), know of your move or upcoming address change. As our district continues to grow, it is very important to update this information as quickly as possible if they ride a bus or if they will be rezoned to another school in our district so they do not end up on a waitlist at the other school.
Also, please let us know if your family will be leaving the district at the end of this school year. This information helps us keep our building numbers up to date, which is very important as we have new enrollments coming in over the summer months.
Finally, all negative meal balances must be paid by May 26, 2023. You can make payments or pay in full at www.bentonville.familyportal.cloud using your child's student ID number. If you need assistance, please email Pam Gaskin - pgaskin@bentonvillek12.org! We are here to help you.

News from Nurse Crutchfield:
I can’t believe it’s May already! What a privilege it has been to care for all our little Owls here at Evening Star! It's been such a great year!
Please remember that if your child has medication of any type or supplies checked into the nurse's office, it will need to be checked out before 3 pm on the last day of school: May 30, 2023. ALL medications must be picked up by the parent/guardian, and no medications will be given to students to transport home. Medication not picked up will be appropriately discarded. Please contact me at 479-360-7406 or dcrutchfield@bentonvillek12.org to set up an appointment for pick up.
Also, if your child has an Asthma Action Plan, Life-Threatening Allergy Plan, Seizure Plan, or a specialized diet order on file for the 2022-2023 school year, we will need a new one on file for the 2023-2024 year. Please make the necessary appointments with your child’s pediatrician or specialist as soon as possible in order to receive an updated plan. Please follow this link to the Bentonville Health Services website to find all the necessary forms needed for your specialized health plan.
Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

Math & Literacy Coach:
Summer is a great time for students to apply the skills they have learned over the past school year. Here are a few links to ideas to get creative in keeping learning fun over the summer.
- Summer of Adventure | PBS KIDS for Parents - Articles, crafts, and ideas to engage students in literacy and math concepts.
- Bentonville Public Library - Student Portal - Stories and games for all ages to sustain skills and the love of reading all summer long!
- Math Before Bed - Have some extra time to spend between road trips or flights? Check out this website for numeracy images that can spark healthy discussions around math. There is something for all age ranges, and you’ll be surprised by what your mathematician notices and wonders!
Keep those literacy and math skills strong!

ART Studio:
As we enter the month of May and the end of school quickly approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and students of Evening Star for the honor and privilege of teaching in this community. I have decided to retire this Spring after a combined 38 years in Missouri and Arkansas. The students here have been a blessing. The ESE parents support the school and students in a way I’ve never witnessed in any school I've been in. Simply amazing! Thank you for everything, mainly entrusting your little ones to us every day. I will miss the sweet smiles and hugs, and I will miss watching these kiddos learn and grow. I have been fortunate to be working here and even more fortunate to be a part of your child's life every day. Thank you!
Keep drawing and making this world a beautiful place!
Mr. VanSlyke
Music Notes:
Thank you, ESE families, for supporting our Naturals Baseball fundraiser! The 4th-grade students sang beautifully at the baseball game!
Kindergarten parents: please save the date for Tuesday, May 23. Kindergarteners will perform in their Kindergarten Celebration at 6:00 p.m. at Bentonville West High School. Students should arrive between 5:30 and 5:45 dressed in their finest picture-ready attire.
Keep filling the world with music.
Mrs. Simpson
Global Connections:
We are almost there! I have had so much fun teaching (and learning from) your sweet owls this year! I am extremely pleased with all that we have accomplished. As we wrap up the school year, we are going to make one last stop in Asia before we sprint through Europe. I hope your child has enjoyed “visiting” all seven continents with me this year. Have a wonderful summer break!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Connor
Digital Literacy:
Thank you for sharing your children with us. Have a wonderful summer.
Mrs. Castro
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE:
Thank you for sharing your whole world with me! It is a privilege to get to work with your children here at Evening Star. I am so proud of all their hard work and how much they have all grown this year. Your child’s ELPA scores should be emailed to you within the next couple of months. Be on the lookout for that email!
If you’re looking for fun activities to continue practicing your child’s English skills, check out the Bentonville Public Library’s website. They are offering many activities such as virtual storytime, book clubs, and curious kids workshops. Check it out here!
***Some activities do require registration. I hope to see you there!
