Spotlight Moments during the month of January
Thursday, January 19: The Cole All-Star Circus came directly to the Elementary School, setting up and performing two amazing back-to-back shows in the Elementary School Gym! The acts included stunt unicycling, quick-change magic, aerial acrobatics, and the ever-popular SLINKO in a dance routine that defies description! There was even audience participation, as four brave dads volunteered to be levitated by Francis the Clown. It was great to see so many students, kids, and parents there, and to see all of their smiling faces during and after the show! The Circus has been coming to Albion for over 20 years, and each year it never fails to astound and excite so many of our students and families. We thank you all for coming to the show, and hope to see even more of you next year, when the circus returns in January, 2024!
- Ms. Krahel's art classes created awesome art work while also learning about saving our oceans. These masterpieces are inspired by The Washed Ashore Project. They are a fun addition to our hallways!
- Thank you to Mr. Hitchcock from the National Weather Service for meeting with our kindergarten students! We learned many fascinating things about all types of weather!

Name and Position: Nicci Nicholson, elementary school social worker
Hometown: Albion
Education: Licensed Master Social Worker
Why did you want to do this job: I wanted to give back to my hometown and make a difference in the community that I was raised in. I have always wanted to work with children, make a positive impact on their lives, and be an advocate for those that don't have voices for themselves. Knowing that we live in an area of poverty, I wanted to become that link for families to get the resources they need in order to provide for themselves and their families.
What is your favorite thing about what you do here: I love building a rapport with the kids and maintaining that connection, becoming their safe space and a friendly face they can turn to when they need help.
What has been your best memory since you worked at Albion: My favorite memory was being able to help families to give their children the Christmas that they deserve and seeing the smiles on the kids faces when they came back to school and wanted to show me all the cool things that Santa brought them, one particular student saying it was "the best Christmas ever".
Do you have any advice or an inspirational quote you’d like to share: Be the change you wish to see in the world. — Mahatma Gandhi
February's Theme: Chat with the Counselor
Mrs. Badura & Mrs. George
The Albion Counseling Department recently had their updated Comprehensive Counseling Plan approved by the Board of Education. This will bring some changes to the academic, social and emotional services for students at Ronald L. Sodoma Elementary School. The elementary school counselors frequently visit K-5 classrooms to present lessons on: Empathy, Bully Prevention, Problem Solving and Personal Safety. These lessons are part of the Tier One level of services for all elementary students. Mrs. Badura and Mrs. George model their lessons from the Second Step curriculum.
This year, per New York State Education Department’s Part 100.2(j)(2) Comprehensive developmental School Counseling programs, each elementary student will have an opportunity to meet with the school counselor to talk about future goals. This will be similar to the academic planning that all 6-12 students receive from the middle and high school level School Counselors. These meetings will be brief and informal. Students who express any additional needs may receive a phone call home seeking permission for the child to meet with the counselor in a small group or in a 1:1 setting to improve in any area that is interfering with learning. These may include: organization skills, friendship skills, coping strategies, etc. If a child is struggling with mental issues beyond the certification of a school counselor, families can request a list of area providers who can better assist.
If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s social/emotional development, you can always contact one of the Albion elementary school counselors (grades K-2: Mrs. George at ggeorge@albionk12.org, grades 3-5: Mrs. Badura at kbadura@albionk12.org) or our elementary school social worker (grades K-5 Mrs. Nicholson at nnicholson@albionk12.org) .
