Daniel Webster Elementary School
Weekly Update:
A Message From Mrs. MacNeil
Greetings DWS Families!
Wow what an amazing first week of school! After a summer of quiet, the building finally felt full of life again! Instead of cleaning solution and floor wax, you could smell chicken nuggets and pizza cooking! Instead of the sound of drilling during the installation of our new security double doors, you could hear student voices and laughter! Instead of seeing empty hallways, there were smiling teachers and students all over the building! I could not be happier to be back to school and I look forward to a great year ahead!
In Partnership,
Mrs. MacNeil
Service Dog Announcement
Dear Families,
We are excited to have Gianna, our assistance dog in the elementary schools, return again this year to work with our students. Gianna is under the supervision of our Districtwide Elementary Health Teacher, Amy Madden. She is a six year old yellow labrador retriever, who has undergone extensive training through an accredited facility (NEADS) to work specifically with children. NEADS is a member of Assistance Dogs International, an organization with a strict set of standards for Gianna’s temperament, care, and continuous training. Mrs. Madden and Gianna will be working together in our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade health classes at all five elementary schools. Research has shown that for most, simply being in the same room as a dog can lower anxiety levels, improve moods, and encourage communication. Gianna will also be incorporated into many of the Social-Emotional/Health lessons which tends to increase students' level of interest, attention, and motivation.
Mrs. Madden will educate and model for your child the appropriate ways to interact with Gianna and no student will have to interact with Gianna if they choose not to. If you have any questions or concerns, or your child has an identified allergy to dogs, please feel free to contact Amy Madden at amadden@mpsd.org. Even if you reached out last year, please do so again this year so that we have the most up-to-date information about your child.
Sincerely,
Marybeth Battis, K-12 Coordinator of Comprehensive Health
Amy Madden, Districtwide Elementary Health Teacher
Ellen M. Martin, Assistant Superintendent of Schools
DWS Security Updates
As a security measure, we will not be letting visitors into the building unless you are volunteering. Visitors who have a scheduled meeting will wait in the vestibule and be escorted by the host to the meeting.
All visitors must present a valid ID - no exceptions! We understand that we know many parents/guardians, but we will be requiring ALL visitors to present their ID when they volunteer and/or pick up a student - EVERY TIME. This will be frustrating at first, but we are working hard to maintain the safety of our students.
