Keeping you informed on important dates and information.
February 28, 2022
We hope our students and families were able to find some time over the break to recharge and relax! As we make our way back from vacation, we know some of the focus is on the shift in the mask guidelines. On February 15, Dr. Cohen provided an update for the district, sharing that our schools will shift to a mask flexible environment on March 7. You can find that email that was sent to all families here.
Over the coming days we will work with students and staff to prepare for the shift to mask flexible guidelines. On Tuesday (3/1), Mr. Clements and Mrs. Moran will hold class meetings to address students' questions and provide information that will be helpful in making this transition.
What is an Inspired Learning Day?
Inspired Learning Days are full-day learning in which we reimagine the school experience and focus on bringing our vision to life.
Inspired Learning Days begin with a school-wide brainstorming session that occurs several months before the event. Through the brainstorming activity, we tap into our students' interests, passions, and curiosities. We then design a full-day event that gives our students the chance to participate in workshops that interest them most.
Built with the support of teachers and many community partners, our Inspired Learning Days provide non-traditional learning experiences aimed at getting our students excited and inspired.
The countdown is on until our next ILD on March 17!!! On Friday (3/4) we will release the schedule of available sessions. On Wednesday, March 9 students will sign up for their sessions during advisory.
After putting these events on hold for the past two years, we are thrilled to bring back our Inspired Learning Days! Take a look at three of the session options below.
Student-Led Session: Create a Chain Reaction
In this session, students will learn about Rube Goldberg, and understand what exactly a Rube Goldberg machine is. Participants will be invited to work together to create sections of one larger Rube Goldberg machine. They will be encouraged to use all different types of materials provided to engineer the most unnecessarily complicated and wacky way to make it from a start to a spectacular finish. Anyone looking for a unique challenge of their engineering passion and creative thinking would be right at home in this session.
Teacher-Led Session: Landing Your Dream Job
How do you communicate your skills, knowledge, experience and goals in a sleek, professional manner to gain the attention of a professional recruiter or employer? Join this session if you'd like to explore the hard and soft skills needed to achieve your career goals and learn how to write and build a professional profile and resume.
Community Partner- Led Session: The Worcester Red Sox at Polar Park
The Worcester Red Sox look forward to welcoming Nipmuc Regional High School students to Polar Park for a behind-the-scenes tour of their new home. Students will get to see the experience that fans see every day, will learn about the design of the park and all of the beautiful art that hangs on the walls. Following the tour, students will get to hear from WooSox Front Office staff members of many different departments to get a better understanding of the work and skills that it takes to open a park and start a successful baseball team in a new city.
The Nipmuc Store Is Now Open.
Breakfast with the Counselors: Managing Stress and Anxiety
The school counseling staff will host a Breakfast with the Counselors event on Tuesday, March 15th from 8:00am-9:00am. Breakfast with the Counselors provides an opportunity for parents to connect with school counseling staff and each other around a number of topics related to adolescent development and the high school experience. An Update from the Social Studies Department
The social studies department has been hard at work with some exciting lessons to share and most recently had their mock trial that you can read more about below. (Featured in the picture from left to right, Jamie Sims, Danielle Jolie, and Mallory Chace)
Patterns of Crime and Justice- Arson Detection Dog Visit
On 1/25 Officer Greg Spahl of the Massachusetts State Police and “Ritz”, his accelerant sniffing dog will return to Nipmuc and visit Mrs. Field and Mr. Merten’s Patterns of Crime and Justice course. Ritz will demonstrate her amazing abilities and Trooper Spahl will explain his role in the Massachusetts State Police Department of Fire Services.
New Deal Sales Fair - The 11th grade social studies classes are delivering the New Deal Sales Fair! The New Deal was a series of programs and projects that were implemented by Franklin Delano Roosevelt to combat the Great Depression. The students researched and created a multimedia presentation on their New Deal program. They then pitched their ideas to their colleagues to gain funding and support for their program. In the culminating activity, students learned about the deficit and prioritizing government spending.
AP US History Mock Trial
Students in the Advanced Placement United States History course tackled civil liberties, government legislation, and the threat of a world war during the Korematsu vs. United States Mock Trial. Students took on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, judges, and jurors while they looked to try the case of Fred Korematsu. Groups worked to prove whether or not Executive Order 9066, passed during World War II, was constitutional. Those in favor, defending the government, tried to convince the jury that the national security of the United States depended on the executive order. Those against, defending Fred Korematsu, argued that his civil liberties as an American citizen were being violated. Korematsu vs. United States became a controversial landmark supreme court case that is still widely debated.
