92 | We have used Junior Scholastic in class throughout the year as an ongoing nonfiction source. The students read the magazine and do activities associated with the stories, so it is real learning and the students are familiar with the process. Our version of Chrome will not allow students access to Scholastic's platform, but I am assigning through Google Classroom and the students respond on a doc. Copy of the post for both 7th and 8th grades for week of 5/4. We will be working from the same issue of Junior Scholastic, the April 20, 2020 issue. This assignment is due by Ma y 7. Please include that date on your responses. 1.Reread the article starting on page 23. 2. Choose a side of the debate. Write 3 paragraphs supporting your choice. Remember: Your choice is an opinion, but you must use only facts from the article to support your opinion. Use formal language - no "I believe" or "I think" statements. I am looking for grammar and punctuation as well as content (what you have to say). Share your response in a doc. 272 | 5/11 7th Grade STEM 2nd Semester 4th Quarter Project 2 WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENT TINY HOUSE PROJECT Tiny houses are small houses that have most of the conveniences of a typical house. They are a smaller version house (not a mobile home) but yes they can be mobile. They are between 100 and 400 square feet versus the average house in the US is about 2500 square feet. One of the biggest reasons people choose a tiny house is cost. The average tiny house costs a homeowner between $50,000 – $70,000 versus the average single family house in the US is between $200,000 - $300,000. For the Tiny House project, you will be designing a house for a young married couple. They have no children and spend long days at the work. When at home they do like to watch television. They would like a guest bedroom also usable for an office and small work out area. They would like a queen size bed to fit in the master bedroom and a kitchen for storing and preparing meals. Finally, they would like a dining area or room to eat in that is large enough to include a couple of guests. Those are the only requests of your clients. WEEK 3 TASK - Sketch a prototype blue print floor plan for proposal to the couple. This should include the entire house. All rooms and dimensions should be visible on this plan. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY ITEMS IN THE ROOMS FOR THIS FIRST PLAN. EXAMPLE THE KITCHEN SHOULD NOT HAVE A TABLE OR ANY APPLIANCES YET! Your floor plan needs to include closets and storage, a bathroom and a laundry room. It needs to be approximately 400 square foot with walls no higher than 10 feet. You may do this project either using paper and pencil or you may use computer assisted design (CAD) software. The CAD system I would like you to use if you choose to use a computer is called Homestyler. The website is https://www.homestyler.com/floorplan/. You can easily create an account using your Edgewood google account and email. Homestyler is fairly easy to figure out. You don’t need to download the program to use it. You do need to save as you work and when you finish. You may screen shot your final floor plan and send it to me. If you need help I have created a video to assist you in building a basic floor plan on Homestyler. Use the link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF4VxxlYL8M WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENT IS DUE Thursday, May 14th by 11:59pm Paper and pencil projects can be sent to me at bill.poehner@edgewoodschools.net. Simply send me a picture from your phone or computer. Please note that paper copies are fine HOMESTYLER IS NOT REQUIRED.

274 | TINY HOUSE PROJECT Tiny houses are small houses that have most of the conveniences of a typical house. They are a smaller version house (not a mobile home) but yes they can be mobile. WEEK 4 TASK – Add ALL room details to your sketch blue print floor plan for proposal to the couple. This should include the entire house. All rooms and dimensions should be visible on this plan. INCLUDE ANY ITEMS IN THE ROOMS. FOR EXAMPLE: THE KITCHEN SHOULD HAVE A TABLE AND APPLIANCES AND THE BEDROOM SHOULD HAVE A BED AND FURNITURE ETC.! As a designer and builder it is important to NOT ONLY include what your clients are asking for BUT ALSO anticipate the typical homeowner needs. For example, be sure the bathroom has a shower or bathtub and the kitchen includes a sink etc. Remember your Tiny House needs to be approximately 400 square foot with walls no higher than 10 feet. Remember to put your name in the title box along with the name of the assignment.
